Math Sites for Kids, Grades 3 - 6
web sites recommended by Associate Professor - Librarian Robert J. Lackie of Rider University

Disclaimer: Our goal here was to find and list quality sites for kids, making sure that the links and advertising banners are appropriate for kids of all ages. However, because the Internet is dynamic, a link or advertising banner can change overnight. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that when using these sites and any other sites on the Internet, children receive some form of supervision whenever they are working online.
  • AAA Math (http://www.aaamath.com/index.html) - This highly recommended math site illustrates and provides interactive arithmetic exercises and problems for grades K-8. It contains a series of basic math skills lessons, solid explanations, and challenging interactive games and problem sets. This is a much-needed resource for formal elementary math classes and homeschooling sessions, which are a resource that can be used by math students in formal elementary education math classes, tutoring, and home schooling.
  • Brain Teasers (http://www.eduplace.com/math/brain/) - Thanks to Houghton Mifflin, you can join forces with classmates, go to this site, and solve one of these mind bogglers. Each Wednesday evening they post a new Brain Teaser for each grade level range: 3-4, 5-6, & 7-8. They post solutions one week later.
  • ENC Online: Math Topics (http://www.enc.org/weblinks/math/) - The Eisenhower National Clearinghouse (ENC) for Mathematics and Science Education has collected effective curriculum resource sites and created high-quality professional development materials to improve K-12 mathematics and science teaching and learning. This is great for students, parents, and educators. Besides the "Math Topics Web Links" section listed here, check out the "Student/Classroom" and the "Reference Sources" sections.
  • Getsmarter.org (http://www.getsmarter.org/index.cfm) - This is a great "animated and interactive testing and learning site where students can compare their performance in math, and science, with other elementary, middle, and high school students worldwide. It gives you a choice of math problems and the level you want to practice. Click on the Games icon for other games available through their site.
  • The Math Forum: Elementary School Student Center (http://mathforum.org/students/elem/) - I believe that this is the best math site on the Web for students, parents, and teachers. One interesting section is their Problems of the Week (PoWs), which are designed to provide creative, non-routine challenges for students in grades three through twelve. Problem-solving and mathematical communication are key elements of every problem. You can also browse this site and look at some of the questions Dr. Math has answered.  Then come up with a math question of your own and submit it.

Check out the stories, crossword puzzles, spellings, and other activities there for elementary school-use
  • WebMath (http://www.webmath.com/index3.html) - Formerly hosted by DiscoverySchool.com, this site is now on its own, and it still offers step-by-step instructions on how to do addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, scientific notation, ratios, and proportions, as well as geometry, pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, data analysis, and problem solving. Great for students with tough homework assignments--it breaks its site down into "Math for Everyone," "General Math," "K-8 Math" (that is what section the link above takes you to), as well as more specific higher-level math areas.
